15 June 2010
Nikila Newman, founder of the charity Infectious Dance Academy, has been presented with the “Special Woman Award” by Frances Miles, one of the founders of the Poole Business Women’s Lunch Club, which sponsored the category.
Held at the Langtry Manor on 13th May, the Business Women Awards recognise the great achievements made by businesswomen in Dorset.
Nikila was chosen for the “Special Woman Award” for her ability to succeed in business after overcoming obstacles and for dedicating her business efforts to the community.
Nikila set up the Infectious Dance Academy in 2003 in Turlin Moor with the purpose of addressing the needs of local teenagers and persuading them to do something positive with their time through Street Dance. Nikila teachers around 200 local people of all shapes, sizes and abilities and in addition to raising their confidence, motivation and self-esteem helps bring the community and families together. She has overcome many obstacles in her own life and has first hand experience of growing up on the estate in which she now works.
Commenting, Frances Miles said: “Nikila is an exceptional role model, inspiring her students to become the very best they can. She is a gifted dance choreographer, teacher and leader and is committed to helping people regardless of their background or the complications they may bring.”
